In the face of COVID-19, we all find ourselves changing how we go about sourcing the essential goods and services that are needed in our daily lives. There is a sudden and massive increase in the need for delivery services and other alternatives to in-person commerce, as so many people are staying home with kids, working remotely and self-isolating.

Some of the businesses impacted by this crisis have adapted their operations from storefront service to delivery service, take-out, curbside pickup, and/or virtual/video delivery.

About a week ago, a large network of community activists, the Social Venture Institute community, responded to this shift by setting up a shared Google document to collect and share information about the local companies offering delivery or shipping.

Inspired by this effort and all the useful listings they gathered, Vancouver web development company Hop Studios set about building a lean but fully-featured online directory where businesses can list information about their services for use by the public.

The directory hopes to include any business that serves or is based in the Greater Vancouver area, including Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam, Langley, Delta, North Vancouver, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, Port Coquitlam, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Port Moody, Langley, White Rock, Pitt Meadows, Bowen Island, Anmore, Lions Bay, Tsawwassen, and Belcarra.

“When I saw this resource was being so actively built, I brought it to our team to brainstorm what we could do to bring it to a broader audience in order to support our own neighbours and business community,” says Travis Smith, president of Hop Studios. “Everyone at Hop was all-in, and after a few long nights, we’re able to provide this free listing service helping companies and individuals to connect and support each other.”

The directory includes local area restaurants, meal prep and meal kits, grocery delivery, pet food, drink products, beauty and health, lifestyle and fun, and more categories as well. Businesses in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland are encouraged to contribute a listing for free. Hop Studios has plans to add additional features, including mapping, in the coming days.

“We’re appealing to everyone: Share this website widely and encourage businesses to get listed,” Smith said. “At a time when so many of us are scrambling to adjust to chaotic circumstances, we want to make life a little easier for all of us.”
