AI Is Changing Search. Here’s What Website Owners Should Do Next

Every few years someone declares SEO dead.

Social media was supposed to replace it. Mobile apps were supposed to replace it. Voice assistants were supposed to replace it.

Now it’s AI.

There’s no question that AI is changing how people discover information online. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and other AI assistants are answering questions directly instead of simply pointing people toward websites. Many businesses are already seeing fewer visitors from traditional search, especially on informational pages.

That sounds alarming. In reality, it’s more of a shift than a collapse.

People haven’t stopped looking for products, services or expertise. They’re simply using new tools to help them find what they’re looking for.

Just like with mobile sites and social media, the businesses that adapt to the new tech will continue attracting customers. Some may even become more visible than they were before.

What’s Actually Changing?

Traditional SEO focused on earning one of the ten blue links on Google’s search results page.

AI search works differently.

Instead of presenting a list of links, AI tools, when used for search and retrieval, summarize information from multiple sources before offering direct recommendations with small citations (sometimes). Often users never click through to a source website. Other times they click only after they’ve already narrowed down their options.

This particularly affects pages designed to answer simple factual questions, which used to be SEO catnip.

Pages that explain a basic definition, list quick facts, or provide straightforward instructions may receive many fewer visits now because AI will often output that information directly.

On the other hand, content that demonstrates genuine expertise is becoming more valuable.

Detailed explanations, original research, case studies, opinions based on real experience, and unique insights are much harder for AI to replace. Those are exactly the kinds of sources AI systems frequently reference when generating answers.

And even if users don’t click through to your site, they may still take your detailed expert advice, as presented by the AI, which can be even mroe in your favor that a site visit would be.

SEO Still Matters

One of the biggest misconceptions is that AI has replaced SEO.

It hasn’t.

Search engines and AI systems still need trustworthy, well-structured, authoritative content to learn from. Good SEO remains the foundation that helps your website become discoverable.

Many of the same practices that have always improved search visibility are now helping websites appear in AI-generated answers as well.

That includes:

  • Publishing genuinely useful content
  • Demonstrating expertise through original insights
  • Building authority within your field
  • Maintaining a technically sound website
  • Creating pages that are easy for both people and machines to understand

The overall strategy hasn’t changed: position yourself to be helpful, trustworthy and authoritative. Just the way people interact your content has.

How to Make Your Website More AI-Friendly

Rather than chasing the latest trend, focus on making your content genuinely useful.

Some practical ways to do that include:

Answer real customer questions

Your customers ask similar questions every day.

Turn those conversations into articles, guides and FAQs. Write for the person asking the question instead of trying to satisfy a keyword tool. This requires more than just an FAQ page—think of them as mini-stories, vignettes or case studies.

Make information easy to understand

AI systems favour content that’s well organized.

Use descriptive headings, concise introductions, bullet lists where appropriate, and straightforward language that answers questions quickly before exploring additional detail.

Add structured data

Schema markup helps search engines understand what your content represents, whether it’s an article, product, organization, event or FAQ.

It won’t magically improve rankings, though it does give search engines more context and can increase your chances of enhanced search results.

Demonstrate real expertise

Generic content is becoming easier than ever to generate. Demonstrably original thinking is becoming more valuable than ever.

Share your experience. Publish case studies. Explain how you solved difficult problems. Include examples from real projects. That’s the kind of content AI can’t easily invent.

(Some folks recommend blocking AI crawlers from your site entirely—that’s a strategy as well, but it’s not the most common nor effective one. Talk to us if you want to explore this approach.)

Use AI as a Marketing Tool

AI isn’t only changing how customers find you.

It can also help you improve your own marketing.

We regularly use AI to:

  • Identify questions customers are asking
  • Uncover gaps in website content
  • Test messaging
  • Improve content outlines
  • Identify objections potential customers may have before contacting us

Used thoughtfully, AI becomes another research tool—not a replacement for expertise or good judgement.

The Future Belongs to Trusted Experts

At the pace that AI is advancing, nobody knows exactly what search will look like five years from now—or even five months.

We do know that this technology will continue evolving.

Businesses that rely on shortcuts or low-quality content will likely struggle.

Businesses that consistently demonstrate expertise, earn trust, and share genuinely helpful information will continue to succeed regardless of how search interfaces change.

That’s been true throughout the history of the commerce, and AI hasn’t changed that.

At Hop Studios, we’re helping clients adapt to this new landscape without chasing every trend. The tools are changing. Good strategy still matters. Great content still matters. Technical SEO still matters.
