Wilson Lue created their firm to preserve the principles, culture, and beliefs of a law firm dedicated to providing tailored, highly responsive, and cost-effective intellectual property services. The company has been one of the foremost intellectual property boutique firms in Canada for decades.

Wilson Lue came to Hop Studios for an urgent site fix. By upgrading their site to the latest version of ExpressionEngine, we solved the initial problem and then improved the site’s functionality.

Services Provided

When one of Canada’s foremost intellectual property boutique law firms approached Hop Studios in February 2023, they needed an urgent website fix. Wilson Lue works with some of the world’s most influential companies and top patent and trademark filers, startups, and small and medium-sized businesses.

With a focus on patents, trademarks, copyrights and designs, enforcement and defence, and contracts and licensing, Wilson Lue is dedicated to delivering high-quality and accessible intellectual property services. To best serve its clientele, Wilson Lue needed a website that not only functioned but also reflected its cutting-edge brand.

Their website had originally been built on an older version of ExpressionEngine in 2018. Wilson Lue set up the site in-house to save on costs, but it began taking up too much time to maintain themselves. As they say, time is money! Although managing the site became a time consumer, the biggest issue was the white screen that occurred when attempting to load the site.

This loading error brought Wilson Lue to Hop Studios with an urgent request: get the site working ASAP. Our team was ready to answer the call to stop the white screen of death and get Wilson Lue’s site back up and running. Upon investigating the issue, we discovered that the index.php file was not being executed due to an incompatibility problem.

Once we had resolved the urgent issue, we were able to turn our focus to making the Wilson Lue site function even better and make the back-end easier to maintain. It all started with upgrading ExpressionEngine from version 4 to the EE7. With that upgrade, we also upgraded all existing add-ons, such as Sitemap 4.0.0, to ensure there wouldn’t be any other incompatibility issues on the website.

Implementing a functional 404 page, which hadn’t previously existed, helped improve the user experience while browsing the site. Hop also made several improvements to the Wilson Lue mobile site, such as making the contact phone number clickable to more easily contact the firm and correcting inline photos that weren’t showing properly in the site’s content. Little things count!

Hop Studios is pleased with the results, and so is Wilson Lue, who can now focus on tackling intellectual property issues instead of trying to manage an out-of-date content management system. Hop Studios looks forward to continuing to assist Wilson Lue with their site needs.
