NCHFP was established with funding from the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture (CSREES-USDA) to address food safety concerns for those who practice and teach home food preservation and processing methods.
Hop Studios has supported NCHFP by increasing the efficiency, ease, and usability of their site through a migration and rigorous redesign.
Services Provided
NCHFP approached us in October 2022, seeking our expertise to assist in the migration of their decade-old site, built as flat HTML files, to a modern content management system (CMS) using ExpressionEngine (EE). Our collaboration began with a clear objective: to migrate the site while preserving its established look, feel, and content structure.
The first project focused on this meticulous migration. The NCHFP website, https://nchfp.uga.edu/, had existed for over a decade and was built from static HTML files. While stable, it lacked the flexibility and ease of modification that a modern CMS provides. Our task was to transition this site to ExpressionEngine, ensuring that the migration did not disrupt the existing design, page rank, and content structure that users and search engines were accustomed to. We also integrated their WordPress blog into EE, creating a unified platform for all of their content. To ensure smooth operations post-migration, we conducted training with the NCHFP team, empowering them to maintain and update the site independently.
The migration project was not just a technical exercise; it involved careful planning and coordination to ensure that every piece of content was accurately transferred and that the site’s functionality remained intact. We worked closely with NCHFP to understand their specific needs and constraints, ensuring that the new CMS would provide a solid foundation for future growth and development.
Following the successful completion of the migration, NCHFP entrusted us with a second project: a comprehensive website redesign to enhance its responsiveness, modernity, and usability. This redesign aimed to improve site navigation, minimize customer service inquiries, and maximize administrative efficiency. The goal was to create a site that was not only visually appealing but also functional and user-friendly for both administrators and visitors.
Notable features of the redesign include:
- A new Donations page: This feature facilitates contributions, making it easier for supporters to donate and support NCHFP’s mission.
- A home page with alert display mechanisms
- Advanced search functionality: We enhanced the search capabilities to help users quickly find the information they need, whether it’s a specific recipe or a detailed fact sheet.
- A Contact page featuring a Freeform-based contact form with reCAPTCHA: This ensures that users can easily reach out to NCHFP while protecting the site from spam and automated submissions.
- A Newsflash feed
- A member-gated content section for educators: Utilizing the GB Gated Content add-on, this section provides secure access to resources specifically for educators, supporting their efforts in home food preservation education.
Additionally, the redesign allowed for the introduction of new sections dedicated to Retail Food Safety, merchandise, and donations. These new sections allow the site to expand its offerings without requiring detailed HTML knowledge, making it easier for NCHFP staff to add and update content. The redesigned site launched successfully in Spring 2024, marking a significant milestone in NCHFP’s digital presence.
Throughout both projects, our focus was on maintaining the integrity of NCHFP’s content while enhancing the overall user experience. We worked diligently to ensure that the site was not only visually appealing but also functional and easy to navigate. By thoroughly understanding NCHFP’s needs and executing two well-planned projects in succession, Hop Studios has significantly enhanced its online presence.
We are thrilled to continue our partnership with NCHFP on additional projects and encourage everyone to explore the fascinating resources available on their site. From informative Fact Sheets to delectable preservation recipes (yum!), there’s something for everyone interested in home food preservation. Whether you’re a novice canner or an experienced preserver, NCHFP’s website is a treasure trove of valuable information and practical advice.
